In her new video, Grimes hangs out a football game, semi-oblivious to her surroundings. Lyrically the song feels like an ode to the vulnerability of independence, with a refrain - “See you on a dark night” - which is less of promise of a romantic encounter than a hope for companionship in a time of exposure. We all can dance around in our own worlds amid the chaos of life’s sporting event, but the complement to solitude must be personal connection - the moments when we feel the grounding presence and support of a friend, family member, or whoever it is who knows the right thing to say to bring us back to earth. As Claire endearingly states: I need someone else / to look into my eyes and tell me “girl you know you gotta watch your health.”
